We invite you to an Author’s Seminar by Oleksandr Filts, dedicated to an in-depth exploration of addiction-related issues through the lens of his original concept of the “Pentagram of Syndromes.”
This seminar is intended for those who seek not only to recognize addictive symptomatology, but also to understand its place within the overall structure of the psyche and the underlying logic of its functioning.
Oleksandr Orestovych Filts is Professor of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Doctor of Medical Sciences, current President of the European Confederation of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapies (ECPPP), President of the Ukrainian Psychotherapists’ Association, Rector of the private university “Unbroken”, and a supervisor.
Modern life, particularly life in wartime, places an extraordinary burden on the psyche. Constant uncertainty, anxiety, loss, forced changes, chronic tension, and the need to continuously adapt exhaust a person’s psychological resources.
Under these conditions, the issue of addiction becomes increasingly relevant. Addictive behavior may serve as a way of regulating inner tension, escaping difficult experiences, or attempting to restore a sense of control and psychological equilibrium.
It is likely that in the coming years, professionals will increasingly encounter different forms of addictive symptomatology and its complications. This makes an understanding of the mechanisms underlying the development of addictions, their functions, and their place within the structure of the psyche an important component of contemporary professional training for psychotherapists and psychoanalysts.
This is why Oleksandr Filts’s Author’s Seminar, “Syndromes in O. Filts’s Pentagram: The Problem of Addiction,” offers an opportunity to explore this issue in depth — from recognizing addictive symptomatology to understanding its psychodynamics and clinical approaches to working with it.
Behind the outward diversity of addictive manifestations — from substance-related addictions to behavioral and other non-substance forms — lie complex mechanisms of psychological regulation, ways of coping with tension, and particular relationships with pleasure, control, the body, and the Other.
During the seminar, the problem of addiction will be examined in detail from both theoretical and clinical perspectives, within the framework of O. Filts’s model.
The seminar will focus on:
— addiction as a syndrome and its place within the structure of psychic organization;
— different forms and manifestations of addictive behavior;
— the mechanisms underlying the development and functioning of addiction;
— the relationship between addictive behavior and other syndromes;
— clinical differentiation of addictive manifestations;
— a psychoanalytic understanding of the function of addiction;
— psychotherapeutic and psychoanalytic approaches to working with addictions;
— analysis of clinical cases.
A special part of the seminar will be the presentation of the collective monograph “The Problem of Addictions and Transfigurative Psychotherapy”, devoted to contemporary approaches to understanding addictions and psychotherapeutic work with them.

A certificate issued by UPU (Ukrainian Psychoanalytic Union) will be provided. It will additionally be certified by the Lviv Psychoanalytic Institute of Mental Health, an institute accredited by the Ukrainian Psychoanalytic Society (UPS) within the European Association for Psychotherapy (EAP), for 8 academic hours.
