“Marital Psychotherapy” Course
Objective: To master methods for working with couple relationships based on the integration of the psychoanalytic approach with other schools of psychotherapy.
Number of hours: 16 hours
Formats: lectures, case demonstrations, professional skills training, and literature review.
Course Syllabus:
Module 1: Lecture Format—“Theoretical Aspects”
- Theory of psychoanalytic couples therapy: historical overview, issues of marriage in the works of classical psychoanalysts, couples therapy in the U.S. and the U.K., the object relations school’s approach to couples therapy
- Central concepts of the psychoanalytic understanding of couples therapy
- Typical forms of marriage and the psychoanalytic study of marriage
- Major Approaches to Couples Therapy: Basic Theories, Schools of Thought, Characteristics, and Differences
- Introduction to Couples Therapy Practice: Diagnosis of Couple Relationships; Characteristics of Working with Couples; Initial Interview and Therapeutic Contract
Module 2 Format: Lecture and Practical Skills Training
- Therapy for Marital Relationship Disorders
- Characteristics of working with couples: Therapy goals; Setting and creating a therapeutic space; Stages of work; Challenges and mistakes in couples therapy;
- Dealing with Resistance and Aggression; Transference and Countertransference in Couple Therapy; Concluding Therapy
- Additional Methods and Techniques
- Case Studies
Module 3 Format: Lecture and Practical Skills Training
- Elements of Systemic-Dynamic Family Therapy
- Case studies
- Practicing skills for working with couples
- Discussion of clinical articles on family therapy
Module 4 Format: lecture and practical skills training
- Practical case analysis based on watching a film, followed by a discussion of methods and approaches
Group size: up to 20 participants.

Maria Vyacheslavivna Evgrashina (Berlin, Germany) – psychoanalyst, marriage counselor. Extensive experience working with couples; guest lecturer at the International Institute of Depth Psychology, delivering lectures on family therapy; certified specialist of the Ukrainian Association of Psychoanalysis. Education: Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, International Institute of Depth Psychology, Eastern European Institute of Psychoanalysis with a specialization in “Systemic-Dynamic Family Therapy,” University of Nice Sophia Antipolis (France), Master’s degree in Humanities and Social Sciences with a focus on psychology.
